Science

The spring semester is divided into two main science units. In the first half, participants sit in small groups to learn about nutrition. Lessons include interactive presentations on the basics of healthy eating, such as understanding “My Plate,” decoding nutrition labels, and distinguishing between different kinds of fats. Participants engage in hands-on experiments and activities that encourage better food choices through practical exploration.

During the second half, the focus shifts to geology. Participants continue small group learning with instructor-led sessions covering topics like rocks and minerals, the rock cycle, plate tectonics, and natural hazards such as volcanoes and earthquakes. These concepts are brought to life through rock observations, experiments, and fun activities designed to reinforce understanding.

Math

This semester in math, participants will explore how the modern consumer engages and spends money in a semi-cashless society. We will discuss how and why the use of money has evolved throughout the years. We will also learn about the multiple ways to spend money such as using debit cards, checks, credit cards and gift cards. We will compare and contrast each mode of spending (interest, balancing ledgers, bills..) and discuss the best spending practices. Each session concludes with shopping in a simulated school store using earned classroom money. Participants will choose to pay with cash, checks, or a Pro U debit card utilizing a mock payment terminal.

Gardening

Participants will learn how plants grow including pollination and will learn to choose the proper flowers to encourage this process. They will use skills learned and apply them through planting flowers, fruits and vegetables, caring for them, and harvesting produce.

Art

Participants will engage in a variety of projects designed to foster creativity and self-expression. The instructional art class is tailored to meet the needs of each individual by providing step-by-step guidance and accessible materials for each activity. Emphasis is placed on exploring different techniques such as painting, collage, and sculpture, encouraging each participant to work at their own pace and celebrate their unique artistic abilities. The supportive environment allows for collaboration making each session both educational and enjoyable.

Music

Our instructional music sessions offer participants an inclusive environment to explore rhythm, melody, and self-expression. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of basic instruments, engage in group singing, create and develop song lyrics and experiment with basic music concepts through direct instruction. The class is structured to accommodate all ability levels, using adaptive strategies and accessible materials to ensure everyone can participate and enjoy making music together. Sessions encourage teamwork, creativity, and confidence, making each class both engaging and fun.

Yoga

Our instructional yoga class is thoughtfully designed to support individuals with different abilities, providing a calm and welcoming environment where participants can practice gentle movements, breathing exercises, and mindfulness. The class incorporates adaptive techniques and accessible props to ensure everyone can comfortably participate. Each session focuses on promoting relaxation, flexibility, and body awareness while encouraging individual progress at a comfortable pace. Instructors offer personalized guidance and foster a supportive atmosphere, making yoga both enjoyable and beneficial for all abilities.

Social Studies

Participants investigate early American history in small groups through instructor-led presentations and interactive activities. The curriculum covers early colonization, the Revolutionary War, the concept of manifest destiny, territorial expansion, westward migration, and related conflicts. Activities and simulations are used to deepen understanding of these historical themes.
